Oh my goodness, have you heard about the new bookstore in China? It’s called Dujiangyan Zhongshuge, and it’s spellbinding! Book lovers, prepare to have your minds blown. The two-story space, designed by the Shanghai-based architecture firm X+Living, appears cathedral-like, mirrored ceilings and gleaming black tile floors reflecting the bookcases. It feels just like an M.C. Escher drawing! Li Xiang, the founder of X+Living, said, “The mirror ceiling in the space is the signature of Zhongshuge bookstore. It effectively extends the space by reflection.”
The shopping experience is superb, with C-shaped bookcases creating intimate spaces. In the center of the store, towering arches and columns take advantage of the full height of the space. And get this: the bookcases were inspired by the history and topography of the region. Li says, “We moved the local landscape into the indoor space. The project is located in Dujiangyan, a city with a long history of water conservancy development, so in the main area, you could see the dam’s construction integrated into the bookshelves.” Phenomenal, isn’t it?
